What does it take to be a Penn Township Firefighter?

Firefighters at a training fire.Currently, the Penn Township Fire Department, classifies firefighters as one of two categories:

Paid-On-Call Firefighters:

This position is for both veterans of the fire service as well as new members to the fire service. The POC firefighter is required to make annual training requirements, do shift duty stays of 9-12 hours in duration twice per month, and receive and maintain certification in First Responder or EMT-B, Basic Firefighter Certification and Firefighter I and II. Paid (Full/Part Time Firefighters):

These position are for experienced firefighters who have at a minimum Firefighter 1 and II Certification, EMT-B Certification, and 3 years firefighting experience. Applicants who wish to apply for one of these positions are encouraged to speak to Chief Wallick about open positions and requirements before completing an application

Description of the Hiring Process

The following process will be used for the hiring of any new Penn Township Firefighter. Failure to complete any portion of this process or incomplete applications will result in the applicant being removed from the process until future processes begin.

STEP 1: Complete an application for employment packet and all applicable forms and return to Penn Station 1. Incomplete applications will be removed from further consideration from the process.

STEP 2: Written Exam-Applicants will complete a basic skills written exam.

STEP 3: Physical Agility Test-Applicants who pass the written exam will take a physical agility exam. The exam resembles current exams provided by both Mishawaka and South Bend Fire Departments. Recruits must provide a written Doctor's note, from their physician, clearing them for participation in the agility assessment.

STEP 4: Board Interview-Applicants selected will be interviewed by a three member board.

STEP 5: Background Investigation-Applicants selected by the interview board will then begin the background investigation.

STEP 6: Wipperman Physical Check-All firefighters must pass a physical exam given by Wipperman Clinic. This exam will either clear a firefighter for unrestrictive duty, or identify limitations to a Firefighters duties. Note: 24 Hour, Full Time, and Part Time Firefighters must pass this exam unrestricted before beginning employment with Penn Township Fire Department.

STEP 7: Chiefs Interview-After successful completion of these steps a final interview will take place in front of the Chief of the Department.
